한 건물 안에서 사는 마을

이 마을은 모두 실내에서 살아요. 이웃 때문에 불평하는 사람에게 이 이야기를 보내 보세요. 알래스카의 춥고 흐린 만에 휘티어라는 마을이 있는데, 그곳 주민 거의 전부가 같은 건물 안에 살아요.

This whole town lives indoors. Send this to the person who complains about their neighbours. In Alaska, on a cold grey bay, there is a town called Whittier, and almost everyone in it lives in the same building.

그 건물은 십사 층 높이이고 오래전에 군대를 위해 지어졌어요. 지금은 그 안에 집, 가게, 우체국, 경찰서, 작은 병원, 교회가 들어 있어요. 시장과 의사와 우유를 파는 사람이 모두 서로의 윗집이나 아랫집에 살아요. 눈이 오면, 그것도 아주 많이 오는데, 아무도 밖으로 나갈 필요가 없어요. 아이들은 땅 밑 터널을 지나서 학교에 가요.

The building is fourteen floors high and was built for the army long ago. Now it holds flats, a shop, a post office, a police station, a small clinic and a church. The mayor, the doctor and the person who sells you milk all live upstairs from each other. When it snows, and it snows a great deal, nobody has to go outside at all. The children reach the school through a tunnel under the ground.

마을로 들어오는 방법은 더 이상해요. 자동차는 산을 뚫고 만든 좁은 터널 하나로만 들어오는데, 그 터널을 기차와 함께 써서 다들 차례를 기다려요. 밤에는 터널이 닫히고 아무도 드나들 수 없어요. 마을은 그저 제자리에 머물러요, 따뜻하고 불이 켜진 채, 눈 속에 우뚝 선 높은 건물 하나가 사방의 산들에 둘러싸여 있어요.

Getting into the town is stranger still. Cars come in through one narrow tunnel cut straight through a mountain, and that tunnel is shared with trains, so everybody takes turns. At night it closes and nobody drives in or out. The town simply stays where it is, warm and lit, one tall building standing in the snow with mountains all around it.
