長い坂を一気に登ると、街全体がひと目で見渡せる。丘の上には城があり、白っぽい屋根と長い塀が続く。その隣には濃い緑の庭園がある。高い建物の間には、市場の低い屋根が見える。川の向こうには、茶屋街の小さな木造の街並みが広がる。そのさらに先には、海が銀色に静かに広がっている。
この街に残っているのは、実は記念碑のようなものではない。戦後にコンクリートで建て直された、そんな街は他にいくらでもある。金沢に残っているのは、もっと普通のものだ。今も魚を売り、それを料理して食べる人がいる市場。本物の客がいる工芸。今夜の仕事のために、二階で練習する誰かがいる通り。この街は建物だけでなく、暮らしの習慣そのものを守ってきたのだ。
海から雨が吹き込んできた。ほとんど毎日そうであるように。最初はにおいとして届き、それから瓦屋根に水の壁となって降り注いだ。ここでは、弁当を忘れることはあっても、傘を忘れることはないと言われている。ポリーは軒下で雨宿りをした。
雨が弱まると、ポリーは水面すれすれを低く飛んだ。その背後では、金箔がまだ薄く、薄く打ち延ばされ続けていた。
