コーヒーはこの国、でもケーキは別の国、というカフェがある。ベルギーとオランダの国境が家々をきれいに避けてはくれない、バーレという小さな町に立っている。国境は家の中を通り抜けているのだ。白い十字と金属の印が通りに沿って伸び、玄関先を横切り、店の棚の下をくぐり、カフェのテーブルをまっすぐ通っている。国境をはさんで向かい合って座りたい友達をタグしてみよう。
どうしてこんなことになったのか。何世紀も前、この土地の領主たちがトランプのカードのように土地を売ったり贈ったりしていた。その結果、町はパッチワークのようになった。ベルギー領の小さな島がオランダ領の中に点在し、その島の中にさらに小さなオランダ領の島がある場所さえある。誰も後で整理しなかったので、国境はそのまま残り、日常生活の中をジグザグに走っている。
この町は、そんな状況を楽しむことを覚えた。家のルールは簡単だ。正面玄関がどちらにあるかで、その国が決まる。中には二つのドアと二つの住所を持つ家もある。カフェでは、コップをこの国で持ち上げ、あの国でテーブルに置くことができる。砂糖を渡すだけで国境を越えられる場所は、たぶん地球上でここだけだろう。
