The Octopus and Its Three Hearts

The octopus is a soft animal that lives in the sea. It has eight arms and no bones. But the most surprising thing is inside its body. The octopus has three hearts, not one.

Το χταπόδι είναι ένα μαλακό ζώο που ζει στη θάλασσα. Έχει οχτώ πλοκάμια και δεν έχει κόκαλα. Αλλά το πιο περίεργο είναι μέσα στο σώμα του. Το χταπόδι έχει τρεις καρδιές, όχι μία.

Two of the hearts push blood to the gills. There the blood takes in oxygen from the water. The third heart then sends this blood to the rest of the body, so the octopus has energy to move.

Δύο καρδιές στέλνουν αίμα στα βράγχια. Εκεί το αίμα παίρνει οξυγόνο από το νερό. Η τρίτη καρδιά στέλνει μετά αυτό το αίμα σε όλο το σώμα, έτσι το χταπόδι έχει δύναμη να κινείται.

The blood of an octopus is blue, not red. It is blue because it has copper inside. This special blood helps the octopus live in cold, deep water. When the octopus swims, its main heart stops, so it likes to walk on the sea floor instead.

Το αίμα του χταποδιού είναι μπλε, όχι κόκκινο. Είναι μπλε γιατί έχει χαλκό μέσα. Αυτό το ιδιαίτερο αίμα βοηθάει το χταπόδι να ζει σε κρύο, βαθύ νερό. Όταν το χταπόδι κολυμπάει, η κύρια καρδιά του σταματάει, γι' αυτό προτιμάει να περπατάει στον βυθό.
