El lago más bajo que el mar

Polly vuela sobre las montañas. Entonces ve agua. Un lago grande y pálido está en un valle seco. Al lado crecen cactus.

Polly flies over the mountains. Then she sees water. A big pale lake lies in a dry valley. Cactus grows next to it.

Este es el Lago Enriquillo. Es el lago más grande del Caribe. Está más abajo que el mar. Los ríos entran en el lago, pero no sale nada. El sol se lleva el agua. La sal se queda. Por eso el lago es muy salado.

This is Lago Enriquillo. It is the biggest lake in the Caribbean. It is lower than the sea. Rivers run into the lake, but nothing runs out. The sun takes the water away. The salt stays. So the lake is very salty.

Hace mucho tiempo, este valle era parte del mar. En las rocas secas cerca del agua hay coral antiguo. También hay conchas, muy lejos de cualquier playa.

Long ago this valley was part of the sea. In the dry rocks near the water there is old coral. There are shells too, far from any beach.

Polly camina junto al agua. Entonces algo se mueve en el lago. Es muy largo. No es un ave.

Polly walks by the water. Then something moves in the lake. It is very long. It is not a bird.
