Il Lago Sotto il Mare

Polly vola sopra le montagne. Poi vede l'acqua. Un grande lago pallido si trova in una valle secca. Vicino ad esso crescono cactus.

Polly flies over the mountains. Then she sees water. A big pale lake lies in a dry valley. Cactus grows next to it.

Questo è il Lago Enriquillo. È il lago più grande dei Caraibi. È più basso del mare. I fiumi entrano nel lago, ma niente ne esce. Il sole porta via l'acqua. Il sale rimane. Così il lago è molto salato.

This is Lago Enriquillo. It is the biggest lake in the Caribbean. It is lower than the sea. Rivers run into the lake, but nothing runs out. The sun takes the water away. The salt stays. So the lake is very salty.

Molto tempo fa questa valle faceva parte del mare. Nelle rocce secche vicino all'acqua c'è corallo antico. Ci sono anche conchiglie, lontano da qualunque spiaggia.

Long ago this valley was part of the sea. In the dry rocks near the water there is old coral. There are shells too, far from any beach.

Polly walks by the water. Then something moves in the lake. It is very long. It is not a bird.
