El Gigante

Polly se despierta antes del amanecer. El farol tiembla. El mar está plateado. Grandes líneas de agua avanzan hacia la playa, una por una. Cada línea es más alta que la anterior.

Polly woke before dawn. The lantern was shaking. The sea was silver. Big lines of water marched to the beach, one by one. Each line was taller than the last.

Entonces llega el gigante. Una ola sube y sube. Es más alta que un edificio. Es una montaña gris con la punta blanca. Una moto de agua lleva a un jinete sobre ella. El pequeño jinete vuela por la ola.

Then the giant came. One wave rose and rose. It was taller than a building. It was a grey mountain with a white top. A jet ski pulled a rider onto it. The tiny rider flew down the wave.

La ola explota. El agua blanca salta por todo el acantilado. Cae sobre el fuerte como lluvia fría. Empaña las gafas de Polly. El ruido suena como un trueno sin fin.

The wave exploded. White spray jumped up the whole cliff. It burst over the fort like cold rain. It fogged Polly's glasses. The roar was like thunder without end.

Toda la tarde llegan los gigantes. Animales miran desde el acantilado: perros, zorros y gaviotas. Todos celebran cada ola. Polly sostiene el farol rojo, mojada y feliz.

All afternoon the giants came. Animals stood on the cliff, dogs and foxes and gulls. They cheered every ride. Polly held the red lantern, wet and happy.
