Вдоль побережья Северного моря есть странное и удивительное место под названием Ваттовое море. Дважды в день море отступает от берега, уходя на километры и открывая морское дно небу. То, что утром было глубокой водой, к полудню превращается в широкую, сверкающую равнину. Путники собираются у края воды, снимают обувь и выходят на дно моря.
Ил мягкий и прохладный под босыми ногами, он просачивается между пальцами. Отмели вовсе не пусты. Они полны крошечной жизни: маленьких ракушек, небольших крабов и завитков, оставленных червями под землёй. Проводник ведёт группу к далёкому острову, внимательно следя за временем, ведь открытое морское дно лишь одолжено у моря.
Затем начинается прилив. Вода возвращается быстро, гораздо быстрее, чем ожидают люди, серебристыми полосами устремляясь по отмелям. Именно поэтому здесь никто не ходит в одиночку. Проводник знает безопасные пути и нужные часы, поэтому группа успевает вернуться на твёрдую землю прежде, чем море вновь заберёт своё дно.
