As abelhas são pequenas, mas trabalham muito. Uma abelha operária voa de flor em flor o dia todo. Ela bebe o suco doce das flores com sua língua comprida. Esse suco doce se chama néctar, e a abelha guarda ele em um estômago especial.
De volta à colmeia, a abelha entrega o néctar para outras abelhas. Elas passam de boca em boca e acrescentam um pouco de algo dos seus corpos. Depois, colocam o néctar em pequenas células de cera. As abelhas batem as asas rápido para secar o néctar, e, devagar, ele vira mel grosso.
Quando o mel está pronto, as abelhas fecham cada célula pequena com uma tampinha macia de cera. O mel agora é comida para toda a colmeia no inverno frio. Uma abelha pequena faz só uma gotinha na vida dela, então as abelhas precisam trabalhar juntas para encher a colmeia.
