Husene i veggen

På den tredje dagen så Polly hus i fjellet. De var små og firkantete, høyt oppe i et stort hull i fjellet.

On the third day, Polly saw houses in the cliff. They were small and square, high up in a big hollow in the rock.

Et ekorn fortalte henne om dem. Folk bygde disse rommene av stein og gjørme, for lenge siden. Hullet var tørt og varmt. Ett rom er lyst, så det har navnet Det Hvite Huset.

A squirrel told her about them. People built these rooms from stone and mud, long ago. The hollow was dry and warm. One room is pale, so it has the name White House.

Bodde folk her før, spurte Polly. Ja, sa ekornet. Folk har bodd i denne dalen i mer enn fire tusen år.

Did people live here before, asked Polly. Yes, said the squirrel. People have lived in this canyon for more than four thousand years.

En liten sti kommer ned fra toppen. Det er den eneste stien du kan gå alene. Polly satte seg og så på skyggene bevege seg.

One small path comes down from the top. It is the only path you can walk alone. Polly sat and watched the shadows move.
