في اليوم الثالث، رأت بولي بيوتاً في الصخرة. كانت صغيرة ومربعة، عالية في تجويف كبير في الصخرة.

On the third day, Polly saw houses in the cliff. They were small and square, high up in a big hollow in the rock.

أخبرها سنجاب عنها. بنى الناس هذه الغرف من الحجر والطين، منذ زمن طويل. كان التجويف جافاً ودافئاً. غرفة واحدة فاتحة اللون، فاسمها البيت الأبيض.

A squirrel told her about them. People built these rooms from stone and mud, long ago. The hollow was dry and warm. One room is pale, so it has the name White House.

هل عاش الناس هنا من قبل، سألت بولي. نعم، قال السنجاب. عاش الناس في هذا الوادي منذ أكثر من أربعة آلاف سنة.

Did people live here before, asked Polly. Yes, said the squirrel. People have lived in this canyon for more than four thousand years.

طريق صغير واحد ينزل من الأعلى. إنه الطريق الوحيد الذي تمشين فيه وحدك. جلست بولي ونظرت إلى الظلال وهي تتحرك.

One small path comes down from the top. It is the only path you can walk alone. Polly sat and watched the shadows move.
