The Hotel That Crosses Borders While You Sleep

There exists a hotel in which you fall asleep in one country and surface in another. It goes by the name of the night train, and Europe still runs plenty of them. You board at dusk in some grand city station, find your cabin, no larger than a wardrobe, with its fold down bed and its small ladder, and around midnight the platform slips away behind you.

Există un hotel în care adormi într-o țară și te trezești în alta. Poartă numele de trenul de noapte, iar Europa mai rulează încă multe. Urci în amurg într-o gară măreață, îți găsești cabina, nu mai mare decât un dulap, cu patul ei rabatabil și scărița mică, iar pe la miezul nopții peronul dispare în spatele tău.

Picture it properly. Your shoes wait beneath the bed, your ticket sits tucked into the pocket by the pillow, and the whole compartment sways gently, as a boat might. Through the gap in the curtain, fragments of the night appear: a lit farmhouse, a station name flashing past too quickly to read, the black shoulders of distant mountains. At some point a border slides beneath you unnoticed, and you sleep through the crossing.

Imaginează-ți-o bine. Pantofii tăi așteaptă sub pat, biletul stă vârât în buzunarul de lângă pernă, iar întregul compartiment se leagănă ușor, așa cum ar face-o o barcă. Prin crăpătura dintre perdele apar frânturi din noapte: o fermă luminată, un nume de stație trecând prea repede ca să poată fi citit, umerii negri ai unor munți îndepărtați. La un moment dat, o graniță alunecă pe sub tine neobservată, iar tu dormi în timpul trecerii.

Come morning, an attendant knocks with coffee and warm rolls, and you raise the blind on a different world. Snow crowns the peaks, mist pools in the valleys, and cattle graze with the unhurried air of creatures that have never been rushed. You went to bed in a capital city and woke inside a postcard of the Alps. No airport, no queue, no misplaced luggage. Just a bed fitted with a very capable engine.

Dimineața, un însoțitor bate la ușă cu cafea și chifle calde, iar tu ridici jaluzeaua peste o altă lume. Zăpada încoronează vârfurile, ceața se adună în văi, iar vitele pasc cu aerul nepripit al unor creaturi care nu au fost niciodată grăbite. Te-ai culcat într-o capitală și te-ai trezit într-o carte poștală a Alpilor. Fără aeroport, fără coadă, fără bagaje rătăcite. Doar un pat prevăzut cu un motor foarte capabil.
