Een tafel voor één

Mia gaat om negen uur een klein restaurant binnen. De zaal is bijna leeg. Een moe ober in een witte schort wijst naar een tafel in de hoek.

Mia goes into a small restaurant at nine. The room is almost empty. A tired waiter in a white apron points to a table in the corner.

"Alleen?" vraagt hij. Mia zegt ja. Ze reist altijd alleen. Ze is een beetje nerveus. Het menu staat op één klein stukje papier.

"Just one?" he asks. Mia says yes. She always travels alone. She is a little nervous. The menu is on one small piece of paper.

Mia wijst naar een woord. Ze kent het niet. De ober glimlacht. "De specialiteit van het huis," zegt hij langzaam. "Het eten van mijn oma. Als u het niet lekker vindt, breng ik u iets anders."

Mia points at a word. She does not know it. The waiter smiles. "The special," he says slowly. "My grandmother's food. If you do not like it, I bring something else."

Het eten komt in een zware kom. Het is heet, met knoflook en kleine stukjes brood. Mia proeft het. De ober kijkt naar haar vanaf de bar.

The food comes in a heavy bowl. It is hot, with garlic and little pieces of bread. Mia tries it. The waiter watches her from the bar.

Mia steekt haar duim omhoog. Hij lacht en vult haar glas weer. "Goed," zegt hij. "Kom morgen terug. Dan vertel ik u wat erin zit."

Mia gives him a thumbs up. He laughs and fills her glass again. "Good," he says. "Come back tomorrow. Then I tell you what is in it."
