왕이 거의 보지 못한 성

바이에른 알프스의 바위 능선 높은 곳에 이야기 속에서 그대로 걸어 나온 듯한 하얀 성이 서 있다. 이 성은 루트비히 이세 왕의 명으로 지어졌는데, 그는 지루한 통치보다 음악과 전설과 아름다움을 훨씬 더 소중히 여긴 인물이었다. 동화에 어울리는 성을 원한 그는 성을 가파르고 거의 불가능해 보이는 절벽 위에 세웠고, 그 탑들은 산안개 속으로 사라져 갔다.

High on a rocky ridge in the Bavarian Alps stands a white castle that looks as though it had stepped straight out of a story. It was commissioned by King Ludwig the Second, a man who cared far more for music, legend, and beauty than for the tedious business of ruling. Wanting a castle worthy of a fairy tale, he set it on a steep, almost impossible crag, its towers disappearing into the mountain mist.

루트비히는 자신의 구상을 현실로 만드는 데 막대한 재산을 쏟아부었다. 솜씨 좋은 장인들이 정교한 방들을 조각하고 벽마다 옛 전설에서 가져온 장면들로 채웠는데, 비용도 아끼지 않았고 실용성에 대한 고민도 거의 없어 보였다. 그러나 왕은 세상을 떠나기 전 약 열하루 밤 정도만 자신이 만든 성 안에서 지냈을 뿐이어서, 성은 끝내 완성되지 못했다. 많은 방이 텅 빈 채로 조용히 남았고, 결코 들어와 살 일이 없을 삶을 위해 정교하게 준비되어 있었다.

Ludwig spent a fortune bringing his vision to life. Skilled craftsmen carved elaborate rooms and covered the walls with scenes drawn from old legends, sparing no expense and, it seems, no thought for practicality. Yet the king lived inside his creation for only around eleven nights before his death, which meant the castle was never actually completed. Many of its rooms remained bare and silent, elaborately prepared for a life that would never move in.

이야기는 묘하게도 행복하게 끝난다. 외롭고 내키지 않아 했던 한 왕이 거의 살지 못한 그 성은 이제 지구에서 가장 많은 사람이 찾는 성 가운데 하나가 되었고, 탑을 올려다보기 위해 매일같이 구불구불한 길을 오르는 여행객 무리를 끌어모은다. 이 성은 전 세계 테마파크에 세워진 동화 속 성들의 영감이 되었고, 그리하여 한 사람의 사적이고 미완성이었던 꿈은 이제 수백만 장의 휴가 사진 속에서 계속 살아 있다.

The story, oddly enough, ends happily. The castle that one solitary, reluctant king barely occupied has since become one of the most visited castles on earth, drawing crowds of travellers who climb the winding path daily just to look up at its towers. It went on to inspire the fairy tale castles found in theme parks around the world, so that a private, unfinished dream now lives on in millions of holiday photographs.
