휴대폰이 고장 난 게 아니다. 그저 추운 것뿐이다

겨울이면 거의 누구에게나 한 번쯤 일어나는 일이다. 추운 곳에 나가 있다가 지도를 확인하려고 휴대폰을 꺼내면 화면이 꺼져 버린다. 조금 전까지만 해도 배터리가 사십 퍼센트라고 표시되어 있었는데도 그렇다. 배터리가 거짓말을 한 걸까? 어떤 의미에서는, 그렇다.

It happens to almost everyone at some point each winter. You are out in the cold, you pull out your phone to check a map, and the screen goes dark, even though it showed forty percent battery only moments earlier. Had the battery been lying to you? In a sense, yes.

휴대폰 안에는 리튬 배터리가 들어 있는데, 이것은 전기를 저장해 둔 탱크라기보다는 작고 계속 진행되는 화학 반응에 가깝다. 배터리 양쪽 사이를 입자가 오가면서 전력이 만들어지는데, 대부분의 화학 작용이 그렇듯 온도가 내려가면 그 움직임도 상당히 느려진다. 추운 공기 속에서는 입자가 너무 느리게 움직여서 배터리가 충분히 빠르게 전력을 내보내지 못하고, 전압이 급격히 떨어지며, 휴대폰은 그것을 배터리가 다 닳은 것으로 읽고 회로를 보호하기 위해 스스로 꺼진다.

Inside every phone sits a lithium battery, which is less a tank of stored electricity than a small, ongoing chemical reaction. Power is generated as particles migrate between the two sides of the battery, and like most chemical processes, that migration slows down considerably once the temperature drops. In freezing air, the particles move so sluggishly that the battery cannot deliver power quickly enough, its voltage collapses, and the phone, reading that drop as an empty battery, switches itself off to protect its circuits.

그 증거는 실내로 들어가는 순간 바로 나타난다. 화학 반응이 따뜻해지면서 다시 빨라지고, 방금 전까지 꺼져 있던 바로 그 휴대폰이 마치 아무 일도 없었다는 듯 삼십 퍼센트쯤을 보여 주며 다시 켜진다. 에너지는 줄곧 그 자리에 있었고, 그저 느려진 반응 뒤에 갇혀 있었을 뿐이다. 그러니 겨울에는 휴대폰을 몸에 가까운 안주머니에 넣어 두는 것이 좋다. 배터리는 사실 약한 것이 아니라, 그저 날씨를 그다지 반기지 않을 뿐이다. 부족했던 것은 충전량이 아니라 온기였다.

The proof arrives the moment you step back indoors. The chemistry warms up, speeds up, and the very same phone switches back on showing perhaps thirty percent, as though nothing had happened at all. The energy had been there the whole time, merely trapped behind a sluggish reaction. Which is why, in winter, it pays to keep your phone in an inner pocket, close to your own body heat: the battery is not actually weak, it is simply unenthusiastic about your weather. Warmth, not charge, was the missing ingredient all along.
