يحدث هذا تقريبا لكل شخص في وقت ما من الشتاء. تكون في البرد، فتُخرج هاتفك لتتحقق من خريطة، وفجأة تُظلم الشاشة، رغم أنها كانت تُظهر قبل لحظات فقط نسبة بطارية تبلغ أربعين في المئة. فهل كانت البطارية تكذب عليك؟ بمعنى ما، نعم.
يوجد داخل كل هاتف بطارية ليثيوم، وهي أقرب إلى تفاعل كيميائي صغير مستمر منها إلى خزان كهرباء مخزنة. وتتولد الطاقة عندما تنتقل الجسيمات بين طرفي البطارية، وكغالبية العمليات الكيميائية، يتباطأ هذا الانتقال كثيرا حين تنخفض الحرارة. وفي الهواء شديد البرودة، تتحرك الجسيمات ببطء شديد إلى درجة أن البطارية تعجز عن توفير الطاقة بالسرعة المطلوبة، فينهار جهدها الكهربائي، ويقرأ الهاتف هذا الانخفاض على أنه بطارية فارغة، فيُطفئ نفسه لحماية دوائره.
ويظهر الدليل بمجرد أن تعود إلى الداخل. فيسخن التفاعل الكيميائي ويتسارع، ويعود الهاتف نفسه للعمل، مُظهرا ربما ثلاثين في المئة، وكأن شيئا لم يحدث. فالطاقة كانت موجودة طوال الوقت، وكل ما في الأمر أنها ظلت حبيسة تفاعل بطيء. ولهذا يُستحسن في الشتاء أن تحمل هاتفك في جيب داخلي، قريبا من حرارة جسدك: فالبطارية ليست ضعيفة فعلا، بل هي فقط غير متحمسة لطقسك. فالدفء، لا الشحن، كان العنصر الناقص طوال الوقت.
