The Ninety-Day Grain

The bar in Kirkwall had five tables and a fire. Polly sat near the heat. "Can I see the menu?" she asked. There were only a few things on the card.

Baren i Kirkwall hade fem bord och en brasa. Polly satte sig nära värmen. "Kan jag få se menyn?" frågade hon. Det fanns bara några få rätter på kortet.

"Could you recommend a good dish?" The owner was a heron. She said the bannock. Bere is a barley grown here for hundreds of years. It grows fast, in a short summer.

"Skulle du kunna rekommendera en god rätt?" Ägaren var en häger. Hon sa bannock. Bere är ett korn som odlats här i hundratals år. Det växer snabbt, på en kort sommar.

"Do you have vegetarian options?" Polly asked. The heron pointed at the same line. Bannock, butter and soft cheese.

"Har ni vegetariska alternativ?" frågade Polly. Hägern pekade på samma rad. Bannock, smör och mjuk ost.

"Can we get the bill, please?" Polly said. The heron took her time, which is a good sign. Outside, the wind was almost calm. Polly walked up to the red cathedral.

"Kan vi få notan, tack?" sa Polly. Hägern tog god tid på sig, vilket är ett gott tecken. Utanför var vinden nästan stilla. Polly gick upp till den röda katedralen.
