Nine Islands, Three Plates

Polly flew low over black rock and green fields by the sea. Mist moved over the hills inland. This was São Miguel, the biggest Azores island.

Polly je nizko letela nad črno skalo in zelenimi polji ob morju. Megla se je premikala čez griče v notranjosti. To je bil São Miguel, največji azorski otok.

The island was made under the sea. Three huge pieces of the earth push together there. Heat rises through cracks in the rock. Every island here came from fire and cooled rock.

Otok je nastal pod morjem. Tam se tri velike plošče zemlje potiskajo skupaj. Skozi razpoke v skali se dviga vročina. Vsak otok tukaj je nastal iz ognja in ohlajene skale.

Most fields here have a hedge of hydrangea flowers: blue, purple, and sometimes pink. Farmers brought the plants from Asia long ago to mark field borders. The rich soil makes the flowers deep blue.

Večina polj tukaj ima živo mejo iz hortenzij: modrih, vijoličnih in včasih rožnatih. Kmetje so rastline davno pripeljali iz Azije, da bi označili meje polj. Bogata prst naredi cvetove globoko modre.

Further inland, green hills rose around quiet valleys. Thin white steam rose from somewhere among them. Polly flew toward the high ground to look.

Bolj v notranjosti so se dvigali zeleni griči okoli tihih dolin. Med njimi se je dvigala tanka bela para. Polly je odletela proti višavju, da bi pogledala.
