Nine Islands, Three Plates

Polly flew low over black rock and green fields by the sea. Mist moved over the hills inland. This was São Miguel, the biggest Azores island.

Polly a zburat jos peste roci negre și câmpuri verzi de lângă mare. Ceața se mișca peste dealurile din interior. Aceasta era São Miguel, cea mai mare insulă din Azore.

The island was made under the sea. Three huge pieces of the earth push together there. Heat rises through cracks in the rock. Every island here came from fire and cooled rock.

Insula s-a format sub mare. Trei bucăți uriașe de pământ se împing acolo. Căldura urcă prin crăpăturile din rocă. Fiecare insulă de aici a venit din foc și din rocă răcită.

Most fields here have a hedge of hydrangea flowers: blue, purple, and sometimes pink. Farmers brought the plants from Asia long ago to mark field borders. The rich soil makes the flowers deep blue.

Multe câmpuri de aici au un gard viu de hortensii: albastre, mov și uneori roz. Fermierii au adus plantele din Asia demult, ca să marcheze hotarele. Solul bogat face florile foarte albastre.

Further inland, green hills rose around quiet valleys. Thin white steam rose from somewhere among them. Polly flew toward the high ground to look.

Mai spre interior, dealuri verzi se ridicau în jurul unor văi liniștite. Abur alb și subțire ieșea de undeva dintre ele. Polly a zburat spre înălțimi ca să vadă.
