Nine Islands, Three Plates

Polly flew low over black rock and green fields by the sea. Mist moved over the hills inland. This was São Miguel, the biggest Azores island.

Mababang lumipad si Polly sa ibabaw ng itim na bato at luntiang bukid sa tabi ng dagat. May ulap sa mga burol sa loob. Ito ang São Miguel, ang pinakamalaking pulo ng Azores.

The island was made under the sea. Three huge pieces of the earth push together there. Heat rises through cracks in the rock. Every island here came from fire and cooled rock.

Ang pulo ay nabuo sa ilalim ng dagat. Tatlong malaking piraso ng mundo ang nagtutulakan doon. Umaakyat ang init sa mga bitak ng bato. Bawat pulo rito ay galing sa apoy at lumamig na bato.

Most fields here have a hedge of hydrangea flowers: blue, purple, and sometimes pink. Farmers brought the plants from Asia long ago to mark field borders. The rich soil makes the flowers deep blue.

Karamihan ng bukid dito ay may bakod na bulaklak na hydrangea: asul, lila, at minsan rosas. Matagal nang dinala ng mga magsasaka ang halaman mula sa Asya para markahan ang hangganan. Ang mayamang lupa ang nagpapalalim ng asul.

Further inland, green hills rose around quiet valleys. Thin white steam rose from somewhere among them. Polly flew toward the high ground to look.

Sa loob, may luntiang burol sa palibot ng tahimik na lambak. May manipis na puting singaw doon. Lumipad si Polly patungo sa mataas na lupa para tumingin.
