The City That Uncovered a River

In the middle of Seoul, there is a river that spent half a century in the dark. The Cheonggyecheon stream once ran openly through the heart of the city, but in the decades after the war it became polluted and crowded with shacks, so the city buried it. Concrete went over the water, and by the 1970s an elevated highway roared above the concrete. The river became a rumour underneath the traffic.

În mijlocul Seulului există un râu care și-a petrecut jumătate de secol în întuneric. Pârâul Cheonggyecheon curgea odinioară liber prin inima orașului, dar în deceniile de după război a devenit poluat și înconjurat de barăci, așa că orașul l-a îngropat. Betonul a acoperit apa, iar până în anii o mie nouă sute șaptezeci o autostradă suspendată vuia deasupra betonului. Râul devenise un zvon sub trafic.

Then, in 2003, Seoul did something that seemed almost backwards: it began demolishing the highway to dig the river back out. Engineers removed the roads, restored almost six kilometres of the stream, and built walkways, stepping stones, and bridges along the banks. Critics said the city was destroying useful infrastructure for a decoration. The project pressed on anyway, and the stream reopened in 2005.

Apoi, în anul două mii trei, Seulul a făcut ceva ce părea aproape absurd: a început să demoleze autostrada pentru a scoate din nou la lumină râul. Inginerii au înlăturat drumurile, au refăcut aproape șase kilometri din pârâu și au construit alei, pietre de trecere și poduri de-a lungul malurilor. Criticii spuneau că orașul distruge o infrastructură utilă pentru o simplă decorație. Proiectul a continuat oricum, iar pârâul s-a redeschis în anul două mii cinci.

The results surprised even the optimists. Fish, birds, and insects returned to water that had not seen sunlight in fifty years. Summer temperatures along the stream measured several degrees cooler than on the parallel roads nearby, a natural air conditioner running through the densest part of the city. Today millions of people walk the banks every year, many of them too young to remember that their favourite place in Seoul was once the underside of a highway.

Rezultatele i-au surprins chiar și pe optimiști. Pești, păsări și insecte s-au întors în apa care nu mai văzuse lumina soarelui de cincizeci de ani. Temperaturile de vară de-a lungul pârâului au fost măsurate cu câteva grade mai scăzute decât pe drumurile paralele din apropiere, un fel de aer condiționat natural care funcționează prin cea mai aglomerată parte a orașului. Astăzi, milioane de oameni se plimbă pe maluri în fiecare an, mulți dintre ei prea tineri ca să-și amintească faptul că locul lor preferat din Seul a fost cândva partea de dedesubt a unei autostrăzi.
