A Barahona la pietra grezza arriva in piccole botteghe. Una sega apre il blocco. Il grigio esterno cade via, e dentro c'è il blu, a bande e vortici con piccole isole bianche, come una foto del mare da molto in alto.
La pietra si chiama pectolite. La pectolite grigia e bianca si trova in molti paesi. La pectolite blu si trova solo qui. La gente ha cercato un altro posto per cinquant'anni e non ne ha mai trovato uno.
Il colore probabilmente viene dal rame dentro il cristallo. Sappiamo però come è stata fatta la pietra. Questa è roccia vulcanica antica. Molto tempo dopo che la lava si è raffreddata, acqua calda si è mossa attraverso i piccoli buchi al suo interno e li ha riempiti lentamente. Così la pietra è acqua che si è fatta dura.
La bottega smeriglia ogni pezzo rendendolo rotondo e liscio, poi lo lucida finché non brilla come vetro. Più il blu è scuro, più vale. Il migliore di tutti si chiama blu vulcanico. Polly osserva un vassoio che si riempie. Non ci sono due pezzi uguali.
