The hill above the village is full of holes. People dug them by hand. The holes go straight down into the ground.

There are about two thousand holes. Next to every hole there is a rope and a bucket.

I minatori non usano macchine. Una macchina romperebbe la pietra blu. Così usano piccoli attrezzi e le mani. La roccia sale nel secchio. Gli uomini scendono con la corda. Alcuni buchi sono molto profondi.

The miners do not use machines. A machine would break the blue stone. So they use small tools and their hands. The rock comes up in the bucket. The men go down on the rope. Some holes are very deep.

Il lavoro è duro. È anche pericoloso. Polly siede e guarda.

The work is hard. It is also dangerous. Polly sits and watches. A wet bucket comes up. A man tips out the rock and looks through it.
