The Road That Runs Out of Room

Polly flies in with mountains on her left and the sea on her right. There is not much room between them. This is the southwest corner of the Dominican Republic. Most visitors never come here. The big hotels are far away on the other coast. Here the mountains come down to the water, and the road has to squeeze through the gap.

Η Πόλι πετάει με τα βουνά στα αριστερά της και τη θάλασσα στα δεξιά της. Δεν υπάρχει πολύς χώρος ανάμεσά τους. Εδώ είναι η νοτιοδυτική γωνία της Δομινικανής Δημοκρατίας. Οι περισσότεροι επισκέπτες δεν έρχονται ποτέ εδώ. Τα μεγάλα ξενοδοχεία είναι μακριά, στην άλλη ακτή. Εδώ τα βουνά κατεβαίνουν ως τη θάλασσα, και ο δρόμος πρέπει να στριμωχτεί ανάμεσά τους.

She follows the road south from Barahona. Every few kilometres a river comes down from the mountains and crosses the road on its way to the sea. The river water is cold, because it has come down from cloud forest. Where a river meets the sea there is a pool, cool at the bottom and warm at the top.

Ακολουθεί τον δρόμο νότια από το Μπαραόνα. Κάθε λίγα χιλιόμετρα ένα ποτάμι κατεβαίνει από τα βουνά και κόβει τον δρόμο στον δρόμο του προς τη θάλασσα. Το νερό του ποταμιού είναι κρύο, γιατί έρχεται από το δάσος των συννέφων. Εκεί όπου το ποτάμι συναντά τη θάλασσα σχηματίζεται μια λιμνούλα, κρύα στον πάτο και ζεστή στην επιφάνεια.

The beaches here are not like other Caribbean beaches. There is almost no sand. The shore is made of pebbles: grey, white and brown, all smooth and round. The waves pull them back with a loud rattle.

Οι παραλίες εδώ δεν μοιάζουν με τις άλλες παραλίες της Καραϊβικής. Δεν υπάρχει σχεδόν καθόλου άμμος. Η ακτή είναι φτιαγμένη από βότσαλα: γκρίζα, άσπρα και καφέ, όλα λεία και στρογγυλά. Τα κύματα τα τραβούν πίσω με έναν δυνατό θόρυβο.

Polly lands on the stones and walks along, turning them over with one foot. Then she stops. One pebble is blue. It is blue all the way through, pale and cloudy, like a piece of shallow water that went hard.

Η Πόλι προσγειώνεται στις πέτρες και περπατάει, γυρίζοντας τις ανάποδα με το ένα πόδι. Ύστερα σταματάει. Ένα βότσαλο είναι μπλε. Είναι μπλε ως το βάθος του, χλωμό και θαμπό, σαν ένα κομμάτι ρηχού νερού που σκλήρυνε.
