Polly fliegt heran, die Berge links und das Meer rechts. Zwischen beiden bleibt kaum Platz. Dies ist die Südwestecke der Dominikanischen Republik. Die meisten Besucher kommen nie hierher. Die großen Hotels liegen weit weg an der anderen Küste. Hier fallen die Berge zum Wasser hin ab, und die Straße muss sich durch die Lücke zwängen.
Sie folgt der Straße nach Süden ab Barahona. Alle paar Kilometer kommt ein Fluss aus den Bergen und kreuzt die Straße auf seinem Weg zum Meer. Das Flusswasser ist kalt, weil es aus dem Nebelwald herunterkommt. Wo ein Fluss das Meer erreicht, bildet sich ein Becken, kühl am Grund und warm an der Oberfläche.
Die Strände hier sind anders als andere Strände in der Karibik. Es gibt fast keinen Sand. Das Ufer besteht aus Kieseln: grau, weiß und braun, alle glatt und rund. Die Wellen ziehen sie mit einem lauten Rasseln zurück.
Polly landet auf den Steinen und geht entlang, dreht sie mit einem Fuß um. Dann bleibt sie stehen. Ein Kiesel ist blau. Er ist bis in den Kern blau, blass und wolkig, wie ein Stück seichtes Wasser, das hart geworden ist.
