The Station Nobody Rides Through
Polly follows the first subway line to a curved, tiled station built to impress in nineteen oh four and closed decades later because trains grew too long for its curve.

The first subway line opened under lower Manhattan in nineteen oh four. It still runs today, day and night, every day of the year, one of the few subway systems that never fully closes. Polly followed a train down through a grate toward its original starting point.
That first station was built to impress. Curved skylights let daylight down through glass in the sidewalk above. The ceiling arched overhead with tile patterns like a church, not a tunnel. Brass fixtures and colored glass made the station feel special.
The problem was the curve. The platform bends sharply so the train can turn back. It was built for trains much shorter than the ones that came later. New trains had center doors as well as end doors, and opening them on such a tight curve was not safe. The station closed to the public at the end of nineteen forty-five.
Nobody tore it out. The tile, the glass, and the brass lamps are all still there in the dark. Every train on that line still passes through it, but no passenger steps onto the platform. Polly sat on an old brass rail and watched one more train rattle past.
That's the story.
