White Roofs and Long Walls

At the top of the hill was the castle. Long stone walls ran beside a dry moat. Above them was a flat green field. Polly walked along the top of a wall.

The roofs here are white. They are made of lead. Old lead looks white in the sun. People say the roof could be melted to make bullets in a war.

The walls show many kinds of stonework. Some stones are rough. Some are cut square and very close. Some make a pattern. The old lords here were very rich, so they paid for beauty too.

The castle burned more than once. Most of it was built again from old plans. One gate is older. Polly sat on its pale roof.
