The Village Under the Storm

"Can you tell me how to get there?" Polly asked at breakfast. Follow the coast road west, the sheep said. The village sits behind a bay of pale sand.

"Kan du säga hur jag tar mig dit?" frågade Polly vid frukosten. Följ kustvägen västerut, sa fåret. Byn ligger bakom en vik med ljus sand.

An oystercatcher was at the site. Polly asked, "I would like to know the history of this particular monument." People lived here five thousand years ago, he said. Then sand covered the village.

En strandskata var på platsen. Polly sa: "Jag skulle vilja veta historien bakom just det här monumentet." Här bodde människor för fem tusen år sedan, sa han. Sedan kom sanden över byn.

The wind took half his words. "Could you please repeat that for me?" Polly asked. Every house is the same inside. A fire in the middle. Beds at each side. A stone shelf on the wall.

Vinden tog hälften av hans ord. "Skulle du kunna upprepa det för mig?" frågade Polly. Varje hus är likadant inuti. En eld i mitten. Sängar på var sida. En hylla av sten mot väggen.

"Could you tell me if the museum is open tomorrow?" Polly asked. She knew she would come back. She looked into one room for a long time.

"Kan du säga om museet är öppet imorgon?" frågade Polly. Hon visste att hon skulle komma tillbaka. Hon tittade länge in i ett rum.
