فطيرة كاملة، أم قطعة فقط

الفرن في آخر المحل، مصنوع من الطوب والفحم المشتعل. خباز غرير يحرك مجرفة طويلة داخل النار وخارجها، يطبخ بيتزا في دقائق قليلة.

The oven sat at the back of the shop, made of brick and burning coal. A badger baker moved a long paddle in and out of the fire, cooking a pizza in just a few minutes.

فتح المحل أبوابه في عام ألف وتسعمئة وخمسة. كثير من الناس القريبين جاءوا لتوهم من إيطاليا، وما عندهم مال كثير. لهذا قطع الخباز البيتزا إلى قطع، وباع قطعة واحدة في كل مرة، ملفوفة بورق.

The shop opened in nineteen oh five. Many people nearby had just come from Italy and did not have much money. So the baker cut the pizza into pieces and sold one at a time, wrapped in paper.

الوصفة ما تغيرت كثيرا. العجين يرتاح طوال الليل، والصلصة توضع باردة، والجبن يذوب في بقع ناعمة، لا في طبقة واحدة ناعمة.

The recipe has not changed much. The dough rests overnight, the sauce goes on cold, and the cheese melts in soft patches, not one smooth layer.

انتظرت الحيوانات في طابور، والنقود جاهزة بأيديها. بولي راقبت القطع تختفي واحدة واحدة، مطوية من المنتصف مرة واحدة.

Animals waited in a line with coins ready. Polly watched the slices disappear, folded once down the middle.
