في هذه اللحظة، رسائلك ترقد في قاع المحيط. حين ترسل رسالة نصية إلى قارة أخرى، فهي لا تصعد إلى قمر صناعي، مهما أوحت لك الأفلام بذلك. بل تغوص. فمعظم الاتصالات بين القارات تقريبا تمر عبر كابلات ترقد على قاع البحر، مارة بحطام السفن والخنادق السحيقة، في ظلام لا ينقشع أبدا.
وكل كابل متواضع الحجم إلى حد لافت، فقلما يتجاوز سمكه سمك خرطوم الحديقة. وبداخله، محمية بطبقات من الفولاذ والبلاستيك، تمتد ألياف زجاجية رفيعة تحمل كلماتك على شكل نبضات من الضوء. وتمد سفن متخصصة هذه الكابلات ببطء عبر محيطات بأكملها، وتُرسم طرقها كما تُرسم الطرق البرية: حول الجبال تحت الماء، بعيدا عن مناطق الصيد، وبعيدا عن أي قاع بحري عرضة للانزياح.
ويتضح أن أعداء هذا النظام ليسوا الجواسيس بل أسماك القرش ومراسي السفن. فالكابلات تتعرض للعض والتشابك والدفن، وحين ينقطع أحدها، تبحر سفينة إصلاح، وتنتشله من القاع، وترفعه على متنها، وتلحم الزجاج من جديد في ورشة عائمة. فحين ترسل الليلة رسالة إلى شخص على الطرف الآخر من محيط، تأمل الرحلة التي توشك كلماتك أن تخوضها: ومضة ضوء تقطع طول قاع المحيط، داخل خيط من الزجاج.
