ポリーは港の上を低く飛び、灰色の水面とフェリーの波の跡を通り過ぎると、前方に高く上げられた一本の腕が見えた。自由の女神は港の入り口近くの小さな島に立っている。像は背後の街ではなく、開けた海を見つめ、頭には七本の光を放つ冠をかぶり、トーチを高くかかげている。
近くで見ると、その表面は驚くほど薄い。像全体は、コインを二枚重ねたほどの厚さしかない銅板でできていて、鉄の骨組みにボルトで留められている。その骨組みを作った技師は、後にパリで塔を建てた人物だ。雨と空気にさらされて、銅は緑色に変わった。もともとは新しいコインのような色をしていた。
フランスで完成した像は、二百個以上の木箱に分けられて海を渡って送られた。作業員たちは一八八六年、ここでそれを再び組み立てた。トーチから地面までの高さは三百五フィートにもなる。昔は遠くの海にいる船が、陸を見る前にまずこのトーチを見つけたという。
すぐ近くには、もっと小さな島がある。かつて千二百万人以上の人々が、そこで船を降り、新しい人生を歩み始めた。ポリーは港の上を一度旋回すると、前方に見える高い建物の方へ飛んでいった。
