The Road That Runs Out of Room

Polly comes in from the north with the mountains on her left and the sea on her right, and there is not much room between them. This is the southwest corner of the Dominican Republic, the part of the island most visitors never see. The big hotels are all far away on the other coast. Here the Sierra de Bahoruco comes down to the water in one long green shoulder, and the road has to squeeze along the gap.

Polly arriva da nord con le montagne alla sua sinistra e il mare alla sua destra, e tra i due non c'è molto spazio. Questo è l'angolo sudoccidentale della Repubblica Dominicana, la parte dell'isola che la maggior parte dei visitatori non vede mai. I grandi hotel sono tutti lontani, sull'altra costa. Qui la Sierra de Bahoruco scende fino all'acqua in un lungo dorso verde, e la strada deve stringersi lungo lo spazio rimasto.

She follows that road south out of the town of Barahona. It bends around headlands, climbs, drops, and every few kilometres a river arrives out of the mountains and cuts straight across it on its way to the sea. The water in those rivers is cold. It has come down out of cloud forest in a hurry. Where it meets the Caribbean there is a pool, and the pool is cool at the bottom and warm at the top, and you can feel both at the same time.

Polly segue quella strada verso sud, fuori dalla città di Barahona. La strada gira attorno ai promontori, sale, scende, e ogni pochi chilometri un fiume arriva dalle montagne e la attraversa dritto nel suo cammino verso il mare. L'acqua di quei fiumi è fredda. È scesa in fretta dalla foresta di nuvole. Dove incontra i Caraibi si forma una pozza, fredda sul fondo e calda in superficie, e si possono sentire entrambe le temperature nello stesso momento.

The beaches here are not what people expect from the Caribbean. There is very little sand. Instead the shore is built of pebbles, grey and white and rust brown, rounded smooth and stacked in long banks that the waves rattle and drag back with a sound like applause.

Le spiagge qui non sono quello che ci si aspetta dai Caraibi. C'è pochissima sabbia. Invece la riva è fatta di ciottoli, grigi, bianchi e marroni ruggine, levigati e ammucchiati in lunghi argini che le onde fanno tintinnare e ritirano con un suono simile a un applauso.

Polly lands on the bank at a river mouth and walks along it, tipping stones over with one foot. Then she stops. One of the pebbles is blue. Not painted, not glass. Blue all the way through, pale and cloudy, like a piece of shallow water that somehow went hard.

Polly atterra sull'argine alla foce di un fiume e cammina lungo di esso, rovesciando le pietre con una zampa. Poi si ferma. Uno dei ciottoli è blu. Non dipinto, non vetro. Blu fino in fondo, chiaro e velato, come un pezzo di acqua bassa che in qualche modo si è fatto duro.
