The Road That Runs Out of Room

Polly comes in from the north with the mountains on her left and the sea on her right, and there is not much room between them. This is the southwest corner of the Dominican Republic, the part of the island most visitors never see. The big hotels are all far away on the other coast. Here the Sierra de Bahoruco comes down to the water in one long green shoulder, and the road has to squeeze along the gap.

Polly llega desde el norte con las montañas a su izquierda y el mar a su derecha, y entre los dos queda muy poco espacio. Este es el extremo suroeste de la República Dominicana, la parte de la isla que casi ningún visitante llega a ver. Los grandes hoteles quedan lejos, en la otra costa. Aquí la Sierra de Bahoruco baja hasta el agua en una larga ladera verde, y el camino tiene que colarse por el hueco que queda.

She follows that road south out of the town of Barahona. It bends around headlands, climbs, drops, and every few kilometres a river arrives out of the mountains and cuts straight across it on its way to the sea. The water in those rivers is cold. It has come down out of cloud forest in a hurry. Where it meets the Caribbean there is a pool, and the pool is cool at the bottom and warm at the top, and you can feel both at the same time.

Ella sigue ese camino hacia el sur, saliendo del pueblo de Barahona. La carretera rodea los cabos, sube, baja, y cada pocos kilómetros un río sale de las montañas y la cruza de lado a lado camino del mar. El agua de esos ríos es fría. Ha bajado a toda prisa desde el bosque nublado. Donde se encuentra con el Caribe se forma una poza, fresca abajo y tibia arriba, y se pueden sentir las dos cosas a la vez.

The beaches here are not what people expect from the Caribbean. There is very little sand. Instead the shore is built of pebbles, grey and white and rust brown, rounded smooth and stacked in long banks that the waves rattle and drag back with a sound like applause.

Las playas de aquí no son lo que la gente espera del Caribe. Hay muy poca arena. En su lugar, la orilla está hecha de guijarros grises, blancos y de color óxido, redondeados y amontonados en largos bancos que las olas remueven y arrastran con un ruido parecido a un aplauso.

Polly lands on the bank at a river mouth and walks along it, tipping stones over with one foot. Then she stops. One of the pebbles is blue. Not painted, not glass. Blue all the way through, pale and cloudy, like a piece of shallow water that somehow went hard.

Polly se posa en el banco de piedras de la desembocadura de un río y camina por él, dando vuelta a las piedras con una pata. Entonces se detiene. Uno de los guijarros es azul. No está pintado y no es vidrio. Es azul por dentro y por fuera, pálido y turbio, como un trozo de agua poco profunda que de alguna manera se hubiera endurecido.
