The Knight and the Deer

The wind woke first on the fourth day. Up in Sítio, the village on the clifftop, it swept across the wide stone square and pushed the gulls sideways as they landed. Polly hopped across the square with her feathers pressed flat. That morning she moved like a tiny grey sail leaning into the gusts.

El viento fue lo primero en despertar al cuarto día. Allá arriba, en Sítio, el pueblo encaramado en el acantilado, barría la ancha plaza de piedra y empujaba de lado a las gaviotas que intentaban posarse. Polly cruzó la plaza dando saltitos, con las plumas bien pegadas al cuerpo. Aquella mañana se movía como una diminuta vela gris que se inclinaba contra las ráfagas.

At the edge of the cliff she found a chapel so small that a dozen visitors would fill it. Inside, every wall was lined with painted tiles, blue pictures on white, rising from the floor to the curved ceiling. The air was cool and completely still. Polly walked slowly across the smooth tiled floor and felt the wind vanish behind her.

En el borde del acantilado encontró una capilla tan pequeña que apenas cabrían en ella una docena de visitantes. Por dentro, todas las paredes estaban cubiertas de azulejos pintados, escenas azules sobre fondo blanco, que subían desde el suelo hasta el techo abovedado. El aire era fresco y estaba completamente quieto. Polly caminó despacio sobre el suelo de baldosas lisas y sintió cómo el viento desaparecía a sus espaldas.

The tiles told a story more than eight hundred years old. On a foggy morning, a rider was hunting a deer along this very clifftop. The deer leapt out into the white mist, and the ground simply ended. At the last possible moment the rider's horse stopped, hooves at the very edge of the rock, and the rider was saved. The little chapel was built to remember that morning, on the exact spot where the ground runs out.

Los azulejos contaban una historia de más de ochocientos años. Una mañana de niebla, un jinete perseguía a un ciervo por ese mismo borde del acantilado. El ciervo saltó hacia la bruma blanca, y el suelo, sencillamente, se acabó. En el último instante posible, el caballo del jinete se detuvo en seco, con los cascos justo al filo de la roca, y así se salvó. La pequeña capilla se levantó para recordar aquella mañana, en el lugar exacto donde la tierra se termina.

Outside again, near the lighthouse, Polly perched on a tall stone statue. It had the head of a deer and held a surfboard under one arm, the old legend and the new courage carrying the same board. Below the statue, the swell had grown again, and the booms now arrived in slow, steady sets.

De nuevo afuera, cerca del faro, Polly se posó sobre una alta estatua de piedra. Tenía cabeza de ciervo y sostenía una tabla de surf bajo un brazo, como si la vieja leyenda y el valor de hoy cargaran la misma tabla.
