The Giant

Polly woke before dawn because the lantern itself was trembling. The sea had turned the color of old silver, and across it, all the way to the horizon, marched enormous ordered lines of water, one behind another, patient as an army. Each line stood taller than the one before. The boom was no longer a sound. It was a feeling in the stone, in the red metal, in her feathers.

Polly se despertó antes del amanecer porque el mismísimo farol temblaba. El mar se había teñido de un color plata envejecida, y sobre él, hasta donde alcanzaba el horizonte, avanzaban hileras enormes y ordenadas de agua, unas detrás de otras, pacientes como un ejército. Cada hilera se alzaba más alta que la anterior. El estruendo ya no era un sonido. Era una sensación metida en la piedra, en el metal rojo, en sus plumas.

Then the giant came. Far out, one line rose and kept on rising, higher than a house, higher than an apartment block, a moving grey mountain with a white crown that the wind tore backwards like smoke. A jet ski curved across its base and let go, and a single tiny rider went flying down the face, small as a comma on an enormous page. The whole cliff seemed to hold its breath.

Entonces llegó el gigante. A lo lejos, una ola se levantó y siguió levantándose, más alta que una casa, más alta que un edificio de pisos, una montaña gris en movimiento con una corona blanca que el viento deshilachaba hacia atrás como si fuera humo. Una moto acuática trazó una curva en la base y soltó a su pasajero, un diminuto surfista que salió disparado por la pared de agua, pequeño como una coma en una página gigantesca. The wave folded and exploded. White water leapt the full height of the cliff and burst over the fort in a cold, glittering mist. Polly felt the spray settle on her wings like rain, and her glasses fogged at the edges. The roar was like thunder that had decided never to finish.

La ola se plegó sobre sí misma y estalló. El agua blanca saltó tan alto como el acantilado entero y rompió sobre el fuerte en una niebla fría y reluciente. Polly sintió cómo la espuma se posaba sobre sus alas como si fuera lluvia, y los bordes de sus gafas se empañaron. El rugido sonaba como un trueno que hubiera decidido no terminar jamás.

All afternoon the giants kept coming. Along the headland stood a great crowd of animals in jackets and scarves, dogs and foxes and goats and gulls pressed together, cheering every ride. The late light turned gold under the storm clouds. Polly gripped the red lantern, soaked and trembling and happier than she had ever been.

Durante toda la tarde siguieron llegando gigantes. A lo largo del cabo se agolpaba una gran multitud de animales con chaquetas y bufandas, perros y zorros y cabras y gaviotas apretujados unos contra otros, aplaudiendo cada ola surfeada. La luz de la tarde se volvió dorada bajo las nubes de tormenta. Polly se aferraba al farol rojo, empapada, temblando y más feliz de lo que jamás había estado.
