The Red Lantern

Polly came up the coast of Portugal in the late afternoon and landed on the strangest lighthouse she had ever seen. It was not a tall white tower at all. It was a squat red lantern, hardly taller than a fishing boat, set on the roof of an old stone fort that has stood on this cliff for more than four hundred years. Polly likes a perch with a view. This one had the best view on the whole Atlantic coast.

Polly llegó a la costa de Portugal a última hora de la tarde y se posó en el faro más extraño que había visto en su vida. No era, ni de lejos, una alta torre blanca. Era un farol rojo achaparrado, apenas más alto que un barco de pesca, plantado sobre el tejado de un viejo fuerte de piedra que llevaba más de cuatrocientos años erguido en aquel acantilado. A Polly le gustan los miradores con buenas vistas, y aquel tenía las mejores de toda la costa atlántica.

The fort sat on a headland that split the sea in two. On one side lay the town of Nazaré, with a warm sheltered beach where small colored boats rested on the sand. On the other side stretched a long, wild, empty beach called Praia do Norte, the north beach, without a single house on it. That evening the water in front of it was so flat it looked polished.

El fuerte se alzaba sobre un promontorio que partía el mar en dos. A un lado quedaba el pueblo de Nazaré, con su playa cálida y resguardada, donde descansaban en la arena pequeñas barcas de colores. Al otro lado se extendía una playa larga, salvaje y desierta llamada Praia do Norte, la playa del norte, sin una sola casa a la vista. Esa tarde el agua frente a ella estaba tan quieta que parecía pulida.

An old albatross climbed to the fort wall with a folded spyglass tucked under one wing. He opened it, studied the flat water for a long while, and then turned to Polly. Do not let this quiet sea fool you, little traveller, he said. Far away, the ocean is already moving. The giants are coming.

Un viejo albatros trepó hasta el muro del fuerte con un catalejo plegado bajo un ala. Lo abrió, estudió el agua en calma durante un buen rato y luego se volvió hacia Polly. No te dejes engañar por esta mar tranquila, pequeña viajera, le dijo. Muy lejos de aquí, el océano ya se está moviendo. Los gigantes se acercan.

Polly looked at the calm water and found that hard to believe. But somewhere beyond the horizon a great storm was leaning on the sea, pushing its energy toward this exact piece of coast. She settled her feet on the warm red metal of the lantern and decided to stay seven days and watch.

Polly miró el agua en calma y le costó creerlo. Pero en algún lugar más allá del horizonte, una gran tormenta empujaba el mar, empujando su energía hacia ese trozo exacto de costa. Se acomodó sobre el cálido metal rojo del farol y decidió quedarse siete días para verlo con sus propios ojos.
