Number Forty-Seven

Carla had cut her hand washing the dishes. It wasn't deep, but it kept bleeding, so she went to the clinic. The receptionist asked for her insurance card and gave her a number. Forty-seven.

कार्ला का हाथ बर्तन धोते समय कट गया था। घाव गहरा नहीं था, लेकिन खून बहता रह रहा था, इसलिए वह क्लिनिक गई। रिसेप्शनिस्ट ने उसका बीमा कार्ड माँगा और उसे एक नंबर दिया। सैंतालीस।

The screen above the door said "Now serving: 31." The waiting room was full. A man was reading the same page of a magazine for ten minutes. A young father was holding a sleeping baby. A teenager was staring at his phone.

दरवाजे के ऊपर स्क्रीन पर लिखा था "अब सेवा में: 31।" प्रतीक्षालय भरा हुआ था। एक आदमी दस मिनट से पत्रिका का वही पन्ना पढ़ रहा था। एक युवा पिता सोते हुए बच्चे को गोद में लिए था। एक किशोर अपने फोन को घूर रहा था।

Carla sat down and watched the numbers change. 32. 33. 36. The numbers did not move in order. She wondered if she had been forgotten.

कार्ला बैठ गई और नंबर बदलते देखने लगी। 32। 33। 36। नंबर क्रम में नहीं बढ़ रहे थे। उसे लगा कि कहीं उसे भुला तो नहीं दिया गया।

After an hour, the screen finally showed 47. She walked through the door to the small office. The doctor looked at her hand for two minutes. "It's nothing," he said. "Clean it twice a day. No stitches."

एक घंटे बाद, स्क्रीन पर आखिरकार 47 दिखा। वह दरवाजे से छोटे कमरे में गई। डॉक्टर ने दो मिनट तक उसका हाथ देखा। "कुछ खास नहीं है," उसने कहा। "दिन में दो बार साफ करना। टाँके की जरूरत नहीं।"

When she left, the waiting room was almost empty. The teenager was gone. The baby was awake. The man had finally turned the page.

जब वह निकली, तो प्रतीक्षालय लगभग खाली था। किशोर जा चुका था। बच्चा जाग गया था। आदमी ने आखिरकार पन्ना पलट दिया था।
