Number Forty-Seven

Carla had cut her hand washing the dishes. It wasn't deep, but it kept bleeding, so she went to the clinic. The receptionist asked for her insurance card and gave her a number. Forty-seven.

Carla s'était coupé la main en faisant la vaisselle. Ce n'était pas profond, mais ça saignait toujours, alors elle est allée à la clinique. La réceptionniste lui a demandé sa carte de sécurité sociale et lui a donné un numéro. Quarante-sept.

The screen above the door said "Now serving: 31." The waiting room was full. A man was reading the same page of a magazine for ten minutes. A young father was holding a sleeping baby. A teenager was staring at his phone.

L'écran au-dessus de la porte affichait « En cours : 31 ». La salle d'attente était pleine. Un homme lisait la même page de magazine depuis dix minutes. Un jeune père tenait un bébé endormi. Un adolescent regardait fixement son téléphone.

Carla sat down and watched the numbers change. 32. 33. 36. The numbers did not move in order. She wondered if she had been forgotten.

Carla s'est assise et a regardé les numéros changer. 32. 33. 36. Les numéros n'avançaient pas dans l'ordre. Elle s'est demandé si on l'avait oubliée.

After an hour, the screen finally showed 47. She walked through the door to the small office. The doctor looked at her hand for two minutes. "It's nothing," he said. "Clean it twice a day. No stitches."

Au bout d'une heure, l'écran a enfin affiché le 47. Elle a franchi la porte du petit cabinet. Le médecin a regardé sa main pendant deux minutes. — Ce n'est rien, a-t-il dit. Nettoyez-la deux fois par jour. Pas de points.

When she left, the waiting room was almost empty. The teenager was gone. The baby was awake. The man had finally turned the page.

Quand elle est sortie, la salle d'attente était presque vide. L'adolescent était parti. Le bébé était réveillé. L'homme avait enfin tourné la page.
