The Train to Granada

The train left Madrid at six in the morning. Half the seats were empty. Elena chose a window seat and watched the city give way to dry, open fields.

Trenul a plecat din Madrid la ora șase dimineața. Jumătate din locuri erau goale. Elena a ales un loc la fereastră și a privit cum orașul se transforma în câmpuri uscate și deschise.

A woman sat across from her. She was older — maybe sixty, maybe more — and she had a small bag with a sandwich wrapped in foil. Soon her phone rang. She answered quietly, but the train was very quiet too.

O femeie s-a așezat în fața ei. Era mai în vârstă — poate șaizeci de ani, poate mai mult — și avea o geantă mică cu un sandviș învelit în folie. Curând, telefonul ei a sunat. A răspuns încet, dar trenul era și el foarte liniștit.

"No, I haven't told her yet," the woman whispered. "I will, but not today. Today I just want to see her." A pause. "She doesn't know I'm sick. Please, don't tell her either."

„Nu, nu i-am spus încă,” a șoptit femeia. „O să-i spun, dar nu azi. Azi vreau doar să o văd.” O pauză. „Ea nu știe că sunt bolnavă. Te rog, nu-i spune nici tu.”

Elena looked out the window and pretended not to hear. But she could not stop listening. The woman talked for a few minutes more, then hung up and ate her sandwich slowly.

Elena a privit pe fereastră și a încercat să pară că nu a auzit. Dar nu se putea opri din ascultat. Femeia a mai vorbit câteva minute, apoi a închis și a mâncat sandvișul încet.

When the train arrived in Granada, the woman stood up and looked at Elena. "I'm going to see my granddaughter," she said, as if explaining something Elena had already asked. "I haven't seen her in a year. Have a good trip."

Când trenul a ajuns în Granada, femeia s-a ridicat și s-a uitat la Elena. „Mă duc să-mi văd nepoata,” a spus, ca și cum ar fi explicat ceva ce Elena deja întrebase. „Nu am mai văzut-o de un an. Călătorie plăcută.”

Elena watched her walk down the platform and disappear into the crowd.

Elena a privit-o cum merge pe peron și dispare în mulțime.
