Lost in Lisbon

Sofía was sure the museum was three streets away. According to her map, all she had to do was turn left. But Lisbon's streets did not behave like streets in other cities. They climbed. They twisted. They ended without warning.

Sofía era sigură că muzeul era la trei străzi distanță. Conform hărții ei, tot ce trebuia să facă era să facă stânga. Dar străzile din Lisabona nu se comportau ca în alte orașe. Se urcau. Se răsuceau. Se terminau fără avertisment.

After twenty minutes, she stopped on a small square she had never seen on any map. A cat was asleep on a chair. An old woman was hanging clothes from a balcony.

După douăzeci de minute, s-a oprit într-o piațetă mică pe care nu o văzuse niciodată pe vreo hartă. O pisică dormea pe un scaun. O bătrână agăța rufe de pe un balcon.

"Excuse me," Sofía called up. "Do you know the way to the museum?" The old woman frowned and disappeared inside. Sofía thought she had been rude. But a minute later, the woman came out of the front door of the building, slowly, holding a piece of paper.

„Scuzați-mă,” a strigat Sofía în sus. „Știți cumva drumul spre muzeu?” Bătrâna a încruntat sprâncenele și a dispărut înăuntru. Sofía a crezut că fusese nepoliticoasă. Dar un minut mai târziu, femeia a ieșit pe ușa din față a clădirii, încet, ținând o bucată de hârtie.

She had drawn a small map by hand. Three streets, two corners, a fountain. "Don't trust the phone here," she said in careful English. "The phone gets confused in this neighborhood."

Desenase o mică hartă de mână. Trei străzi, două colțuri, o fântână. „Nu te încrede în telefon aici,” a spus ea în engleză cu grijă. „Telefonul se încurcă în acest cartier.”

Sofía thanked her. She did not find the museum that afternoon. She kept the paper map for the rest of the trip.

Sofía i-a mulțumit. Nu a găsit muzeul în acea după-amiază. A păstrat harta pe hârtie pentru restul călătoriei.
