Lost in Lisbon

Sofía was sure the museum was three streets away. According to her map, all she had to do was turn left. But Lisbon's streets did not behave like streets in other cities. They climbed. They twisted. They ended without warning.

Sofía tinha a certeza de que o museu ficava a três ruas. Segundo o seu mapa, só tinha de virar à esquerda. Mas as ruas de Lisboa não se comportavam como as ruas de outras cidades. Subiam. Torciam-se. Acabavam sem avisar.

After twenty minutes, she stopped on a small square she had never seen on any map. A cat was asleep on a chair. An old woman was hanging clothes from a balcony.

Ao fim de vinte minutos, parou numa pequena praça que nunca tinha visto em nenhum mapa. Um gato dormia numa cadeira. Uma senhora idosa estendia roupa de uma varanda.

"Excuse me," Sofía called up. "Do you know the way to the museum?" The old woman frowned and disappeared inside. Sofía thought she had been rude. But a minute later, the woman came out of the front door of the building, slowly, holding a piece of paper.

— Desculpe — chamou Sofía para cima. — Sabe como se vai ao museu? — A senhora franziu o sobrolho e desapareceu para dentro. Sofía pensou que tinha sido mal-educada. Mas um minuto depois, a senhora saiu pela porta do prédio, devagar, com um papel na mão.

She had drawn a small map by hand. Three streets, two corners, a fountain. "Don't trust the phone here," she said in careful English. "The phone gets confused in this neighborhood."

Tinha desenhado um pequeno mapa à mão. Três ruas, duas esquinas, um chafariz. — Não confie no telemóvel aqui — disse num inglês cuidado. — O telemóvel confunde-se neste bairro.

Sofía thanked her. She did not find the museum that afternoon. She kept the paper map for the rest of the trip.

Sofía agradeceu. Não encontrou o museu nessa tarde. Guardou o mapa em papel durante o resto da viagem.
