Lost in Lisbon

Sofía was sure the museum was three streets away. According to her map, all she had to do was turn left. But Lisbon's streets did not behave like streets in other cities. They climbed. They twisted. They ended without warning.

Sofía wist zeker dat het museum drie straten verderop was. Volgens haar kaart hoefde ze alleen maar links af te slaan. Maar de straten van Lissabon gedroegen zich niet zoals straten in andere steden. Ze klommen omhoog. Ze draaiden. Ze eindigden zonder waarschuwing.

After twenty minutes, she stopped on a small square she had never seen on any map. A cat was asleep on a chair. An old woman was hanging clothes from a balcony.

Na twintig minuten stopte ze op een klein plein dat ze nog nooit op een kaart had gezien. Een kat sliep op een stoel. Een oude vrouw hing was op vanaf een balkon.

"Excuse me," Sofía called up. "Do you know the way to the museum?" The old woman frowned and disappeared inside. Sofía thought she had been rude. But a minute later, the woman came out of the front door of the building, slowly, holding a piece of paper.

„Pardon", riep Sofía omhoog. „Weet u hoe ik bij het museum kom?" De vrouw fronste haar voorhoofd en verdween naar binnen. Sofía dacht dat ze onbeleefd was geweest. Maar een minuut later kwam de vrouw langzaam door de voordeur van het gebouw naar buiten, met een vel papier in haar hand.

She had drawn a small map by hand. Three streets, two corners, a fountain. "Don't trust the phone here," she said in careful English. "The phone gets confused in this neighborhood."

Ze had een klein kaartje met de hand getekend. Drie straten, twee hoeken, een fontein. „Vertrouw het telefoontje hier niet", zei ze in zorgvuldig Engels. „De telefoon raakt in de war in deze buurt."

Sofía thanked her. She did not find the museum that afternoon. She kept the paper map for the rest of the trip.

Sofía bedankte haar. Ze vond het museum die middag niet. Ze bewaarde de papieren kaart voor de rest van de reis.
