Lost in Lisbon

Sofía was sure the museum was three streets away. According to her map, all she had to do was turn left. But Lisbon's streets did not behave like streets in other cities. They climbed. They twisted. They ended without warning.

소피아는 박물관이 세 블록 떨어진 곳에 있다고 확신했다. 지도에 따르면 왼쪽으로 돌기만 하면 됐다. 하지만 리스본의 거리들은 다른 도시의 거리처럼 단순하지 않았다. 가파르게 올라가고, 구불구불 꺾이고, 예고 없이 막다른 길로 끝났다.

After twenty minutes, she stopped on a small square she had never seen on any map. A cat was asleep on a chair. An old woman was hanging clothes from a balcony.

이십 분 후, 소피아는 어떤 지도에서도 본 적 없는 작은 광장에서 멈춰 섰다. 고양이 한 마리가 의자에서 잠들어 있었다. 한 할머니가 발코니에서 빨래를 널고 있었다.

"Excuse me," Sofía called up. "Do you know the way to the museum?" The old woman frowned and disappeared inside. Sofía thought she had been rude. But a minute later, the woman came out of the front door of the building, slowly, holding a piece of paper.

"실례합니다," 소피아가 위를 보며 소리쳤다. "박물관 가는 길을 아세요?" 할머니는 인상을 찌푸리더니 집 안으로 사라졌다. 소피아는 자신이 무례했다고 생각했다. 그런데 잠시 후, 할머니가 종이 한 장을 들고 건물 정문으로 천천히 나왔다.

She had drawn a small map by hand. Three streets, two corners, a fountain. "Don't trust the phone here," she said in careful English. "The phone gets confused in this neighborhood."

할머니가 손으로 직접 그린 작은 지도였다. 세 개의 거리, 두 개의 모퉁이, 분수 하나가 그려져 있었다. "여기서는 휴대폰을 믿지 마세요," 할머니가 조심스러운 영어로 말했다. "이 동네에서는 휴대폰이 헷갈려해요."

Sofía thanked her. She did not find the museum that afternoon. She kept the paper map for the rest of the trip.

소피아는 고마워했다. 그날 오후에는 결국 박물관을 찾지 못했다. 하지만 그 종이 지도는 여행이 끝날 때까지 간직했다.
