Lost in Lisbon

Sofía was sure the museum was three streets away. According to her map, all she had to do was turn left. But Lisbon's streets did not behave like streets in other cities. They climbed. They twisted. They ended without warning.

Sofía yakin museum itu hanya tiga jalan dari sini. Menurut petanya, dia hanya perlu belok kiri. Tapi jalan-jalan di Lisbon tidak seperti jalan di kota lain. Mereka menanjak. Mereka berkelok-kelok. Mereka berakhir tiba-tiba tanpa peringatan.

After twenty minutes, she stopped on a small square she had never seen on any map. A cat was asleep on a chair. An old woman was hanging clothes from a balcony.

Setelah dua puluh menit, dia berhenti di sebuah alun-alun kecil yang tidak pernah dia lihat di peta manapun. Seekor kucing sedang tidur di kursi. Seorang nenek sedang menjemur pakaian dari balkon.

"Excuse me," Sofía called up. "Do you know the way to the museum?" The old woman frowned and disappeared inside. Sofía thought she had been rude. But a minute later, the woman came out of the front door of the building, slowly, holding a piece of paper.

"Permisi," teriak Sofía ke atas. "Apakah Ibu tahu jalan ke museum?" Nenek itu mengerutkan kening dan menghilang ke dalam rumah. Sofía pikir dia sudah bersikap tidak sopan. Tapi satu menit kemudian, nenek itu keluar dari pintu depan gedung, berjalan pelan, sambil memegang selembar kertas.

She had drawn a small map by hand. Three streets, two corners, a fountain. "Don't trust the phone here," she said in careful English. "The phone gets confused in this neighborhood."

Dia telah menggambar peta kecil dengan tangan. Tiga jalan, dua tikungan, sebuah air mancur. "Jangan percaya ponsel di sini," katanya dalam bahasa Inggris yang hati-hati. "Ponsel sering bingung di lingkungan ini."

Sofía thanked her. She did not find the museum that afternoon. She kept the paper map for the rest of the trip.
