Barrels on Every Roof

From above, the rooftops of Manhattan share one repeating shape: a round wooden barrel standing on four thin legs, topped with a cone. Polly had seen dozens of them without knowing what they were, until she landed close enough to watch one being built.
A raccoon carpenter worked alone on the roof, fitting long cedar boards edge to edge in a circle. There was no glue and no nails anywhere. Steel hoops, tightened from the outside, hold the whole tank together, the same way a barrel maker has done it here since eighteen sixty-six.
The city requires any building taller than six stories to keep one of these on the roof, because normal water pressure cannot reach that high on its own. Gravity does the rest, pushing water back down through the pipes whenever a tap opens below, and feeding the sprinklers first if there is ever a fire.
Somewhere between ten thousand and fifteen thousand of these tanks still stand across the city. Most were built by family companies that have done this work for generations. Polly watched the last hoop tighten with a low note, then flew off toward the next rooftop.
