Leaving at First Light

On her last morning, Polly climbs to the watchtower one final time, and finds Berta already there, which is odd for a creature who claims to despise climbing. The marten shrugs. Somebody has to check that the sunrise is done properly, she says. They sit together on the old stones while the sky goes about its slow, spectacular business.

Nel suo ultimo mattino, Polly sale alla torre di guardia un'ultima volta, e trova Berta già lì, cosa strana per una creatura che sostiene di detestare le salite. La faina fa spallucce. Qualcuno deve controllare che l'alba venga fatta a regola d'arte, dice. Siedono insieme sulle vecchie pietre mentre il cielo sbriga i suoi affari lenti e spettacolari.

First light touches the tower, then walks down the wall, then spills across the rooftops, and for a few minutes the whole town glows rose and gold, as if the houses were lit from inside. The bells of the flock sound faintly from the high meadows. Down in the gorge, the river keeps its ancient loop, holding the town the way it has held it for a thousand years.

La prima luce tocca la torre, poi scende lungo il muro, poi si rovescia sui tetti, e per qualche minuto l'intera città brilla di rosa e d'oro, come se le case fossero illuminate da dentro. Le campane del gregge suonano deboli dai prati alti. Giù nella gola, il fiume mantiene la sua ansa antica, tenendo la città come la tiene da mille anni.

Berta does not do farewells, she announces, and then does one anyway, pressing a dried fig into Polly's wing with great firmness. For the road, she says. Towns like this one do not mind being left, she adds, because they know that leaving is the first half of coming back. Then she trots away down the wall, tail high, without looking around.

Berta annuncia che lei gli addii non li fa, e poi ne fa uno comunque, premendo un fico secco nell'ala di Polly con grande fermezza. Per il viaggio, dice. Le città come questa non si offendono se le lasci, aggiunge, perché sanno che partire è la prima metà del tornare. Poi trotterella via lungo il muro, coda alta, senza voltarsi.

Polly lifts off from the tower and lets the river show her the way out, following the green water through the gorge until the pink town folds away behind the hills. The fig, she decides, will be for later, somewhere far from here, when she needs to taste a small pink town again.

Polly si stacca dalla torre e lascia che sia il fiume a mostrarle l'uscita, seguendo l'acqua verde attraverso la gola finché la città rosa si ripiega dietro le colline. Il fico, decide, sarà per dopo, in un posto lontano da qui, quando avrà bisogno di sentire di nuovo il sapore di una piccola città rosa.
