Leaving at First Light

On her last morning, Polly climbs to the watchtower one final time, and finds Berta already there, which is odd for a creature who claims to despise climbing. The marten shrugs. Somebody has to check that the sunrise is done properly, she says. They sit together on the old stones while the sky goes about its slow, spectacular business.

Pour son dernier matin, Polly monte une dernière fois à la tour de guet, et y trouve Berta déjà installée, ce qui est étrange pour une créature qui prétend détester grimper. La fouine hausse les épaules. Il faut bien que quelqu'un vérifie que le lever du soleil est fait correctement, dit elle. Elles s'assoient ensemble sur les vieilles pierres pendant que le ciel accomplit son lent et spectaculaire travail.

First light touches the tower, then walks down the wall, then spills across the rooftops, and for a few minutes the whole town glows rose and gold, as if the houses were lit from inside. The bells of the flock sound faintly from the high meadows. Down in the gorge, the river keeps its ancient loop, holding the town the way it has held it for a thousand years.

La première lumière touche la tour, puis descend le long de la muraille, puis se répand sur les toits, et pendant quelques minutes la ville entière brille de rose et d'or, comme si les maisons étaient éclairées de l'intérieur. Les cloches du troupeau sonnent faiblement depuis les hautes prairies. En bas, dans la gorge, la rivière garde sa boucle ancienne, tenant la ville comme elle la tient depuis mille ans.

Berta does not do farewells, she announces, and then does one anyway, pressing a dried fig into Polly's wing with great firmness. For the road, she says. Towns like this one do not mind being left, she adds, because they know that leaving is the first half of coming back. Then she trots away down the wall, tail high, without looking around.

Berta annonce qu'elle ne fait pas d'adieux, puis en fait un quand même, en pressant une figue séchée dans l'aile de Polly avec une grande fermeté. Pour la route, dit elle. Les villes comme celle ci n'ont rien contre les départs, ajoute t elle, parce qu'elles savent que partir est la première moitié du retour. Puis elle trottine le long de la muraille, la queue haute, sans se retourner.

Polly lifts off from the tower and lets the river show her the way out, following the green water through the gorge until the pink town folds away behind the hills. The fig, she decides, will be for later, somewhere far from here, when she needs to taste a small pink town again.

Polly s'élève de la tour et laisse la rivière lui montrer la sortie, suivant l'eau verte à travers la gorge jusqu'à ce que la ville rose se replie derrière les collines. La figue, décide t elle, sera pour plus tard, quelque part très loin d'ici, quand elle aura besoin de goûter une petite ville rose.
