Leaving at First Light

On her last morning, Polly climbs to the watchtower one final time, and finds Berta already there, which is odd for a creature who claims to despise climbing. The marten shrugs. Somebody has to check that the sunrise is done properly, she says. They sit together on the old stones while the sky goes about its slow, spectacular business.

En su última mañana, Polly sube una vez más a la torre vigía, y encuentra a Berta ya allí, lo cual es raro en una criatura que asegura despreciar las escaladas. La garduña se encoge de hombros. Alguien tiene que comprobar que el amanecer se hace como es debido, dice. Se sientan juntas en las piedras viejas mientras el cielo se ocupa de su asunto lento y espectacular.

First light touches the tower, then walks down the wall, then spills across the rooftops, and for a few minutes the whole town glows rose and gold, as if the houses were lit from inside. The bells of the flock sound faintly from the high meadows. Down in the gorge, the river keeps its ancient loop, holding the town the way it has held it for a thousand years.

La primera luz toca la torre, luego baja caminando por la muralla, luego se derrama sobre los tejados, y durante unos minutos el pueblo entero brilla en rosa y oro, como si las casas estuvieran encendidas por dentro. Las campanillas del rebaño suenan débiles desde los prados altos. Abajo, en la garganta, el río mantiene su vieja curva, sosteniendo el pueblo como lo sostiene desde hace mil años.

Berta does not do farewells, she announces, and then does one anyway, pressing a dried fig into Polly's wing with great firmness. For the road, she says. Towns like this one do not mind being left, she adds, because they know that leaving is the first half of coming back. Then she trots away down the wall, tail high, without looking around.

Berta no hace despedidas, anuncia, y acto seguido hace una, apretando un higo seco contra el ala de Polly con gran firmeza. Para el camino, dice. A los pueblos como este no les importa que los dejen, añade, porque saben que irse es la primera mitad de volver. Luego se aleja trotando muralla abajo, con la cola alta, sin mirar atrás.

Polly lifts off from the tower and lets the river show her the way out, following the green water through the gorge until the pink town folds away behind the hills. The fig, she decides, will be for later, somewhere far from here, when she needs to taste a small pink town again.

Polly despega de la torre y deja que el río le enseñe la salida, siguiendo el agua verde por la garganta hasta que el pueblo rosado se pliega y desaparece detrás de las colinas.
