The Shepherd at the Gate

Polly is up before the sun, because Berta has promised her a spectacle. They wait on the wall above the old gate as the sky turns from ink to pearl. Then Polly hears it before she sees it, a river of small bells, and around the corner comes a flock of sheep, pouring through the narrow gate like wool poured from a jug.

Polly is op voor de zon, want Berta heeft haar een schouwspel beloofd. Ze wachten op de muur boven de oude poort terwijl de hemel van inkt naar parelmoer kleurt. Dan hoort Polly het voordat ze het ziet, een rivier van kleine belletjes, en om de hoek komt een kudde schapen, die door de smalle poort stroomt als wol die uit een kan wordt geschonken.

Behind the flock walks a shepherd with a wooden crook and a straw hat, unhurried as the mountains themselves. Beside him pads an enormous white mastiff with kind, serious eyes and a bark he saves for special occasions. The sheep know the way better than anyone. They have been walking these lanes at dawn since long before anyone thought to photograph them.

Achter de kudde loopt een herder met een houten staf en een strohoed, even onhaastig als de bergen zelf. Naast hem stapt een enorme witte mastiff met vriendelijke, ernstige ogen en een blaf die hij bewaart voor speciale gelegenheden. De schapen kennen de weg beter dan wie dan ook. Ze lopen deze steegjes al in de vroegte sinds lang voordat iemand bedacht ze te fotograferen.

Polly flies down and asks, politely, if she may come along. The mastiff considers her the way a mountain considers a snowflake, then gives the smallest nod. So she rides the morning up the slopes with them, past the last houses, past the wall's long shadow, out to where the grass still holds its green in the high meadows above the gorge.

Polly vliegt naar beneden en vraagt beleefd of ze mee mag. De mastiff bekijkt haar zoals een berg een sneeuwvlok bekijkt, en geeft dan het kleinste knikje. Dus reist ze de ochtend mee de hellingen op, voorbij de laatste huizen, voorbij de lange schaduw van de muur, tot waar het gras nog groen is in de hoge weiden boven de kloof.

They spend the day up there, sheep tearing grass, mastiff dozing with one eye open, bells making their lazy music. When the heat softens toward evening, the whole procession turns for home, and Polly rides back into town on the woolly back of the lead ewe, feeling, for one excellent half hour, like part of the flock.

Ze blijven daar de hele dag, schapen die gras rukken, de mastiff die dommelt met een oog open, belletjes die hun luie muziek maken. Als de hitte tegen de avond zachter wordt, keert de hele stoet huiswaarts, en Polly rijdt de stad weer in op de wollige rug van de voorste ooi, en voelt zich een uitstekend half uur lang deel van de kudde.
