The Shepherd at the Gate

Polly is up before the sun, because Berta has promised her a spectacle. They wait on the wall above the old gate as the sky turns from ink to pearl. Then Polly hears it before she sees it, a river of small bells, and around the corner comes a flock of sheep, pouring through the narrow gate like wool poured from a jug.

Polly è in piedi prima del sole, perché Berta le ha promesso uno spettacolo. Aspettano sul muro sopra la vecchia porta mentre il cielo passa dall'inchiostro alla perla. Poi Polly lo sente prima di vederlo, un fiume di piccole campane, e da dietro l'angolo arriva un gregge di pecore che si riversa attraverso la porta stretta come lana versata da una brocca.

Behind the flock walks a shepherd with a wooden crook and a straw hat, unhurried as the mountains themselves. Beside him pads an enormous white mastiff with kind, serious eyes and a bark he saves for special occasions. The sheep know the way better than anyone. They have been walking these lanes at dawn since long before anyone thought to photograph them.

Dietro il gregge cammina un pastore con un bastone di legno e un cappello di paglia, tranquillo come le montagne stesse. Al suo fianco avanza un enorme mastino bianco dagli occhi gentili e seri, con un abbaio che riserva alle occasioni speciali. Le pecore conoscono la strada meglio di chiunque altro. Percorrono questi vicoli all'alba da molto prima che a qualcuno venisse in mente di fotografarle.

Polly flies down and asks, politely, if she may come along. The mastiff considers her the way a mountain considers a snowflake, then gives the smallest nod. So she rides the morning up the slopes with them, past the last houses, past the wall's long shadow, out to where the grass still holds its green in the high meadows above the gorge.

Polly scende in volo e chiede, con educazione, se può unirsi. Il mastino la considera come una montagna considera un fiocco di neve, poi concede il più piccolo dei cenni. Così lei cavalca il mattino su per i pendii con loro, oltre le ultime case, oltre la lunga ombra del muro, fino a dove l'erba tiene ancora il suo verde nei prati alti sopra la gola.

They spend the day up there, sheep tearing grass, mastiff dozing with one eye open, bells making their lazy music. When the heat softens toward evening, the whole procession turns for home, and Polly rides back into town on the woolly back of the lead ewe, feeling, for one excellent half hour, like part of the flock.

Passano lì la giornata, le pecore che strappano l'erba, il mastino che sonnecchia con un occhio aperto, le campane che fanno la loro musica pigra. Quando il caldo si ammorbidisce verso sera, l'intera processione gira verso casa, e Polly rientra in città sulla schiena lanosa della pecora capofila, sentendosi, per una mezz'ora eccellente, parte del gregge.
